SDS Sheets for Common Ethanol Solutions (Mixtures) with Water

Use these SDS sheets for ethanol solutions of Culinary Solvent + Water mixed well to form various final strengths (% Alcohol by Volume).  The data contained in these sheets applies only to mixtures of ethyl alcohol (ethanol, Culinary Solvent) and water.  Please be advised, ethanol is an alcohol, but not all alcohols are safe like ethanol.  These SDS sheets do not apply to mixtures that contain additional additives, and should not be used unless full knowledge of the mixture of the mixture is known.

SDS vs MSDS - What is the difference?

Answer: SDS and MSDS refer to the same document.  As of 2012, MSDS sheets have been replaced with SDS sheets.  The contents of the two documents convey the same information, it is purely a naming change which seeks to drop the "M" from the title of the document.  For a more complete detail on when and why the change occurred, please read: 

What are the common components of standard Safety Data Sheets (SDS)?

Standards set forth by the ____ provide guidelines on the titles of the sections all SDS sheets must include so that ALL important information may be conveyed to any interested person who comes in contact with the chemical.  

All SDS sheets contain the following 16 sections:

  • Section 1 - Identification.
    • Required Information: Product Identifier, Manufacturer or Distributor name, Supplier Physical Address, Supplier Phone Number, Emergency Phone Number (24/7), Common Names, Recommended Use; Restrictions on Use.
  • Section 2 - Hazard(s) Identification
    • Required Information: All hazards regarding the chemical, Images of Required Label Elements or Placards.
  • Section 3 - Composition / Information on Ingredients
    • Required information: Specific details on chemical ingredients by weight, Trade secret claims if applicable and permitted.
  • Section 4 - First-aid Measures
    • Required Information: includes important symptoms/ effects, acute, delayed; required treatment.
  • Section 5 - Fire-fighting measures
    • Required Information: lists suitable extinguishing techniques, equipment; chemical hazards from fire.
  • Section 6 - Accidental release measures 
    • Required Information: emergency procedures; protective equipment; proper methods of containment and cleanup.
  • Section 7 - Handling and storage
    • Required Information: lists precautions for safe handling and storage, including incompatibilities.
  • Section 8, Exposure controls/personal protection
    • Required Information: lists OSHA's Permissible Exposure Limits (PELs); Threshold Limit Values (TLVs); appropriate engineering controls; personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Section 9, Physical and chemical properties 
    • Required Information: Lists the chemical's characteristics.
  • Section 10, Stability and reactivity
    •  Required Information: Lists chemical stability and possibility of hazardous reactions.
  • Section 11, Toxicological information
    • Required Information: includes routes of exposure; related symptoms, acute and chronic effects; numerical measures of toxicity.
  • Section 12, Ecological information
    • Not enforced by OSHA and sometimes optional
  • Section 13, Disposal considerations
    • Not enforced by OSHA and sometimes optional
  • Section 14, Transport information
    • Not enforced by OSHA and sometimes optional
  • Section 15, Regulatory information*
    • Not enforced by OSHA and sometimes optional
  • Section 16, Other information
    • Required Information: he date of preparation or last revision.
