Compare to Everclear®

Culinary Solvent and Everclear are both pure ethyl alcohol products distilled from 100% corn, but there are important differences.  Learn more about Everclear vs Culinary Solvent.

What is 200 Proof Food Grade Ethanol?

Food grade ethanol is pure ethyl alcohol designed for applications beyond beverages. It is distinguished by its strength (200 proof, 99.7% min ABV), purity (0% water, zero additives), and packaging sizes exceeding 1.75 liters.  Food Grade Ethanol is often specifically legal to buy online in states that ban the sale of Everclear 190 Proof for beverage purposes.

Can 200 Proof Substitute for 190 Proof in Recipes?

Yes.  For nearly all recipes, substitute 200 proof food grade ethanol 1:1 for 190 proof Everclear alcohol.

But, Wait...I heard 200 Proof Is Impossible?

We get this question a lot.  Food safe processes after distilling to 192.6 proof make 200 proof food grade ethanol possible without using harmful chemicals.  And while 200 proof ethanol is hygroscopic, the 200 proof purity maintains it strength for years with proper use and storage.  We discuss more details on how we achieve 200 proof on our page Understanding 200 Proof Alcohol.

Can I make 200 proof into 190 proof?

Yes!  The recipe to go from 200 proof alcohol down to 190 proof alcohol is simple as "Just Add Water"How much water?  The answer depends on how much ethanol you are starting with, but it works out to be about 1 tablespoon per quart of 200 proof.  We wrote a blog post about how to accurately measure and dilute 200 proof ethanol into 190 proof (or any custom proof) here: Follow our detailed recipe on how to measure the precise amount of water by weight here.

Being in California where I can’t purchase 190 proof ever clear culinary solvents delivers to my door at about the same price!

I have been interested in making my own tinctures but could never find everclear in my state. I’ve tried other high proof vodkas but they always gave an alcohol taste that I didn’t like and as I’m celiac other grain alcohols weren’t an option. This culinary solvent is perfect as it’s safe for celiacs but the proof is also higher than anything you can find on the shelf. If you are thinking about it, don’t hesitate, this is exactly what you need.

Making tincture this year I first tried 151 proof Everclear. Then I tried Culinary Solvent Organic Food Grade Ethanol. The difference was remarkable! Will not use anything else moving forward. The superiority is clearly observed by performance, and in the final product by taste. A grateful fan.

I live in California where it’s impossible to buy 190 proof Everclear. I don’t drink Everclear, but use it for cleaning in the kitchen and for making extracts and tinctures. Culinary Solvents had a great sale on 5 gallon jugs of Organic 190 Proof Food Grade Ethanol, and I purchased one immediately.

As a sublingual tincture base, the organic 200 proof food grade has impressed me as superior to Everclear 190 in two ways; (1) less irritable to the palate and (2) better tasting.

To dilute 200-proof ethanol to 190-proof, you can add a specific amount of distilled water. For instance, adding approximately 1 tablespoon of water per quart of 200-proof ethanol achieves the desired concentration.
