Quick Reference for Weight of Ethanol

Because ethyl alcohol (ethanol) has as a lower density than water, its weight can vary from water or other liquids.

Here is a quick reference for commonly asked weights:

  • 1 gallon of 200 proof ethyl alcohol = about 7 lbs.
  • 5 gallon jug of 200 proof or 190 proof ethyl alcohol = about 33 lbs.
  • 55 gallon drum of 200 proof or 190 proof ethyl alcohol (including the weight of the drum) = about 384 lbs.
